Fairy Topiary

I spent time in the studio again yesterday. I never get in there as often as I’d like, and then when I do it’s hard to get me out of there! Got some fun projects done, including this one, my little Fairy Topiary (click image to view full size), which I’ll add to my collection of Fairy Crafts.

Fairy Topiary

I started with a small white, enamel bucket, about 2-1/2″ in diameter. In the bottom of that I add a piece of Styrofoam, which I cut to fit. Next I created the topiary, beginning with a reused end of a craft swab (waste not, want not, right?) that I painted green. I stuck on a small Styrofoam ball to the top of it, which I also painted green. Then I hot glued on some craft flowers until the ball was covered, and added a pink satin bow to it too. Then I stuck it into the Styrofoam in the bottom of the bucket.

Then I needed to create the fairy, which started with a vintage photo of a girl. Again I used a discarded craft swab to attach to the back of the photo, which I’d printed on cardstock. Then I used some craft picks to create her wings, which are made of pink tulle and beads. I simply taped those onto the back of the photo. Then I stuck that into the Styrofoam in the bucket as well.

To give weight to the bucket to hold everything in place, I put in glass flat marbles that you can get in any craft store. I have had these sitting around for years and had plenty of them. So I just poured in enough to go to the top of the bucket. They add a neat texture and some shimmer, which I like. They almost look like the tops of bubbles in there. :) Once those were in place I finished the bucket off by adding a pink satin bow to each side.

The whole thing has a sort of Shabby Chic feel to it, and a vintage touch too. I think something like this would look great as a table decoration at a bridal shower or baby shower or something. But my little fairy is going in my studio so I can see her everyday.

Imagine Face Hangtag

This is a new altered art hangtag I’ve created that I’m calling Imagine Face Hangtag.

Imagine Face Hangtag

These are tags I created on two-sided scrapbook cardstock paper, which I cut out using a tag-shaped cutter. I stamped on the image of a vintage face using black ink first. Then I created the torn edge and distressed strip for the upper part of the tag, which I stamped on with the word, Imagine in black ink. After I added that I just added a butterfly sticker and then finished it with a brown satin ribbon.

I love the combination of the brown ribbon with the turquoise pattern on the paper. It’s just a simple, elegant tag (I think). Perfect to add to a little gift. :)

1950 Canvas

I created this Altered Art canvas for the latest challenge at the Gingersnaps Creations blog: On the Road.  We needed to use things in our project that would be found “on the road.” So I used a vintage photo of my mom on a car as my inspiration for my project.

1950 Canvas Altered Art

I started with an 8″ square canvas, which I painted with black acrylic. Then I spritzed it all over with a mixture of pearlescent white paint and water to give it some sheen and texture. Next I added some red patterened scrapbook paper with torn edges. I used a black ribbon near the top of the canvas, and then added an over-sized black and white hangtag and another cut piece of the red paper to serve as the background for the vintage photo. After I affixed the photo I embellished the canvas with metal gears and keys, some black satin bows, pearl gems, and a white a flower. And I added a metal bracket to frame “1950″ under the photo, which is when the photo was taken.

Wasn’t my mom adorable?!

He Loves Me Altered Envelope

Time for another fun challenge at the Gingersnaps Creations blog. This time the theme challenge is 3 Papers, 3 Buttons, 3 Words.  My He Loves Me altered art is my creation for this challenge.

He Loves Me Altered Envelope

I love using Kraft Envelopes from time to time when I’m doing Altered Art, and that’s what I used this time. I added a piece of torn paper bag with a vintage newsprint pattern onto the envelope first. Then I tore some scrap wallpaper with a red color and pattern and added that to the top and bottom of the envelope, over the paper bag print. Then I added some lace trim to the bottom. I embellished this with a vintage photo transparency that I adhered to some grungy paper; I also added paper flowers affixed with button brads, some gems, a 3D paper butterfly, and the words He Loves Me. I finished off the top of the envelope with some black ribbon.

My 3 Papers are the grungy paper behind the transparency, the red wallpaper, and the newsprint paper bag. My 3 buttons are the 3 button brads. And my 3 words, of course, are the He Loves Me words I added.

I love how this turned out, and I like that it sort of looks like a paper purse when it’s hanging on the wall.

Say Cheese Altered Kraft Envelope

I was feeling like doing some Altered Art when I was finally able to make it into my studio for a couple of hours. And since I have a whole bunch of Kraft envelopes out there, I thought I’d go ahead and alter one of those. My Say Cheese project is the result.

Say Cheese Altered Kraft Envelope

I started by using some Tea Dye Distress Ink all over the envelope, adding extra to the edges. I wanted it to look fairly grungy. Next I added some blue patterned scrap paper across the top. Then I added a vintage photo of some lovely ladies, who look to me like they’re having their photo taken. I added some alpha stickers on the photo to spell out “Smile, Marcy.” I used some Tim Holtz clear film down the right side to go with the photo theme and also added a flower near the top of the envelope. Then at the bottom I added my Say Cheese paper sentiment, along with a camera image and a button. Granted, the button doesn’t make much sense. But it’s blue and I just needed something with color down there. ;)

Dreams of Spring Collage

Amazingly, Spring is right around the corner now. Yay! And the gals over at the 3 Muses Challenge Blog have chosen “Spring” as the theme for this week’s challenge. So my Dreams of Spring Collage is my entry into that challenge.

Dreams of Spring Collage

I started with a plain piece of chipboard that I painted with a buttermilk yellow acrylic. Then I used Tim Holtz’ Tattered Rose Crackle Paint on top of that to give the base some texture, and I distressed the edges a bit with ink as well.

Since flowers and fairies are always what comes to my mind when I think of Spring, I chose a vintage photo of a fairy girl for my subject. She looks like she’s dreaming of something, with that faraway look in her eyes, so maybe it’s Spring? I added a glittery crown and rhinestone gem to her head, and an extra rhinestone gem to the sash of her dress.  Then I added some white lace trim and pink satin ribbon to the bottom of the image, and embellished that with some pink stain roses. And the last step was just to add some alphas to spell out Dreams of Spring.

Vintage Queen Hangtag

Crowns are the thing right now at Gingersnap Creations, so I’ve created a hangtag to enter their Crowns Challenge.  I’m calling it my Vintage Queen Hangtag. It’s also going into the Tag Tuesday Postcard Challenge.

Vintage Queen Hangtag

I started with a plain white hangtag, which I then used a decorative corner punch on to give it some added detail. Then I used brown ink and a text rubber stamp to create the background, and I distressed the edges with the same brown ink.

I found a vintage photo of a young girl, which I then Mod Podged in place on the tag. Then I added a transparent paper image over the top of the girl photo. This image has the little bird on it and reads Carte Postale at the bottom, which means “postcard” in French. I love the way the photo of the girl looks through this transparent (vellum-type) paper.

For embellishments, I added a crown using a 3D-O to make it appear in relief (raised up from the background) and I added rhinestone gems to the crown. I also added a rhinestone gem above the bird. I added alpha stickers to spell out q-u-e-e-n.  And then I added a pretty flower at the bottom of the tag. I finished it off with some coordinating satin ribbon.

I think the tag itself has a very vintage feel, and a very shabby chic feel as well.

Cherish Altered Heart

Well, seeing that it’s Valentines Day, I thought I’d get one more heart-themed project in before the clock strikes midnight. And I’m using it for the Ginersnaps Creations Charms Challenge too.  It’s my Cherish Altered Heart project.  My beads will have to serve as charms in this case…I didn’t have any actual charms to play with.

Cherish Altered Heart

I started with a plain wooden heart, which is about 3″ high. It’s the same wooden heart I used for my Love Altered Hearts project.  I added a piece of teal and cream colored patterned scrapbook paper that I liked. Then I added a vintage photo that I scalloped the edges on.

Next I found a piece of chipboard that had the word Cherish on it, in a metallic teal font. It matched perfectly so I glued that at the bottom of the vintage photo. Then I distressed the edges of the heart a bit with some brown distress ink to give the heart a wee bit of dimension. I also added a teal paper flower, with a rhinestone gem in the center.

To finish this off I added 3 swarovski crystals as my “charms” to the bottom of the heart, one in a teal color, and two in clear. I love the way those look on the heart. They almost give it a shabby chic feel, don’t you think? Oh, and at the last minute I decided to turn this into a magnet so I could hang it on the frig. Love it!

Tea Time Hangtag

This altered hangtag was inspired by the Gingersnaps Creations Hot Beverages Challenge.  I thought a good, old-fashioned tea party would be perfect for my theme.

Tea Time Hangtag

I started with a plain white hangtag, which I distressed on the edges with red ink, and then I stamped on a doily texture to the lower left bottom edge.

Then I chose a transparency image of a vintage photo of two adorable little girls, who are clearly having a tea party. Gosh, remember those?! I added a bright red rose sticker, along with some red rhinestone gems here and there. And I also added the Tea Time alpha stickers. I finished it off with some simple black ribbon.

Tea, anyone?

G is For Girl Bookmark

I was feeling kind of girly, and also feeling like making a new altered art bookmark, so with those as my starting points, this G is For Girl Bookmark was the result.

G is For Girl Bookmark

I started with a piece of cardstock scrap paper that I liked. It has hints of pastel minty greens and grays, though it’s kind of difficult to tell that in the photo. I cut that to bookmark size and then also scalloped the bottom edge.

To embellish, I started with some stickers: the “G”, and also a postage sticker. And I added a paper accent showing some “G’s” and the word “girl” as well, which I also used some distress ink on to distress the edges. I added a contrasting strip of scrap paper at the bottom of the bookmark. Then I added the vintage photo of the little girl, who’s carrying a large cone of flowers, and wearing minty green and pink (very girly!).  Then I added some paper flowers, which I attached with plastic button brads. I even added a little button brad to the little girl’s pants. And I finished it off with a coordinating satin ribbon.

I’m using this in the Craft Your Passion “Button Up” Challenge.
