Finished Beauty

I mostly finished my Beauty mixed media painting last weekend. I still need to seal it, but the painting part of it is complete.

Finished Beauty Mixed Media

I’m still getting used to working with acrylics, since I’ve been an oil painter most of my adult life. Even in high school I gravitated toward oils. But my goal this summer is to keep stretching my creative skills and working outside of my comfort zone–and I’m determined to keep moving forward. I like how this turned out, but I don’t ‘love’ it. I did enjoy the process the most though! And it’s given me ideas for other things.

I’m really just trying to find my own creative voice. I don’t think I’ve ever had a creative voice that is uniquely me. You know, where you could look at my artwork and know that Tina Grimes painted that. It’s frustrating. But that just makes me more determined than ever to find it. I wish my Mom was here to help me. She always had the best advice, creative or otherwise.

Also, just so you’ll know, my blog/website was hacked recently, and I’m still working to get that fixed. [Thanks, Michael for being an ASS and proving that you never loved my mother.] So if my blog disappears briefly at any point in the near future, please don’t give up on it. It’s just part of the process of fixing everything. I basically have to delete everything here and reinstall it all. Assuming I don’t screw it up in doing so. Please hang in there with me during this process. And if you don’t follow me on Facebook you might want to, because I will post updates there if the blog will be down for any length of time.

Thanks a bunch!

Progress on Beauty

Just an update to show this week’s progress on my ‘Beauty‘ mixed media painting. It’s not finished yet, but I did get a lot done. And just a note–the background is not actually the color of blue that it appears to be in the photo. It’s actually turquoise blue. I took this photo with my iPhone and it’s never 100% great or accurate with photos that are taken indoors. But oh well.

Beauty Mixed Media Painting

I actually hated this painting a little ways into it. I almost gave up on it. But then I got some ideas going in my head and just kept plugging away at it–mostly because I love the drawing part of it and I didn’t want to see it wasted! So even though I still don’t love it, I don’t quite hate it anymore. And I am going to see it through to the finish…love it or not. :) After all, this is about getting outside of my comfort zone–learning new things and trying new techniques, right?! I can’t grow if I don’t try new things, so I must keep going! The next photo I post will likely be the finished product (I hope), so stay tuned!

WIP Sneak Peek – Beauty

I was in the studio all day yesterday. First I had to put away and organize all the new art supplies I had bought at Hobby Lobby on Saturday–and considering I’m already out of space in my studio, that was no easy task! But once I got that finished I started to work on a new Mixed Media painting. The working title for it is “Beauty,” but that will probably change. I just needed to call it something. Anyhoots, I wanted to share a sneak peek of this WIP (Work In Progress).

Beauty Mixed Media Mosaic

Beauty Mixed Media Drawing

The top photo is the beginning stage of the background. Right now it’s a mosaic on canvas made from scrapbook paper. The bottom photo is a drawing, done with prismacolor pencils, that will become the focal point of the painting, my “beauty.” I look at her as a stylized drawing of my daughter (and I say ‘stylized’ because really it doesn’t look a lot like her–but that’s what artistic license is for!).

I will be building up the background mosaic with layers of paint, texture, ink, and whatever else that inspires me during the process. When I created my Poppy Painting recently, it really made me want to do more mixed media. So I started checking out the work of mixed media artists online, various art books, and so forth…and that was enough to fuel my creative fire. My favorite sources of inspiration were found here:

Diane Salter

Tracy at Thru the Attic Door

Book, Mixed Media Girls

I probably won’t be back in the studio until next weekend, but will post more photos as I progress with this project. Stay tuned!

Flower Trio Canvas

I’ve really been loving doing more mixed media paintings in the studio lately. I’ve got lots of things I want to try yet and have been exploring lots of fabulous art blogs for inspiration. But this piece is just a simple canvas I did and I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with it. I just knew I was going to create a deep red background and distress the edges with some robin’s egg blue, because I’ve been loving that color combo lately. :) Finally I was inspired by some fabric flowers in my studio, and this Flower Trio Canvas was the result.

Flower Trio Mixed Media

The flowers are robin’s egg blue (even though the color isn’t as pretty in this photo as it is in real life) and are attached to the canvas with antiqued copper brads. Then I took some rusty wire to create stems, and added just a bit of blue paint on the wire too so they’d pop out more. This is a 5″ canvas, just something cute to hang on the wall somewhere.

Blue Forest at Sunset

This is another of my Nature oil paintings that is also mixed media.  I’ve called it Blue Forest at Sunset. It utilizes the same techniques I used in both my Fall Leaves Mixed Media, as well as my Trees in Orange paintings.

Blue Forest Sunset

I love being able to combine texture into my painting, which this technique with tissue paper allows me to do. I have some ideas rolling around in my head for future projects using this technique. Hopefully I can do some experimenting later this summer. That’s always the challenge though…too many ideas, too little time!

Patriotic Vintage Photos

I spent much of last weekend and this week squeezing in studio time (around baby-sitting the grandbabies) to work on a new painting. I just finished it, but haven’t had time to get photos taken so that I can post my latest creation. So, since this weekend is the 4th of July, I thought it might be a nice time to post some vintage photos for you. I use vintage photos so much in my altered art and mixed media projects, and I’m completely addicted to them. I know some of you are too, so why not share the vintage photo love?!

Please LEFT-CLICK each photo to open it in a new window. Then RIGHT-CLICK each photo and then choose SAVE IMAGE AS. Please do not hotlink to these images. Hotlinking is bandwidth theft (many people don’t realize this!) and it is a no-no, and it will force me to delete them.

Sailor Boy

Liberty Girl

Uncle Sam

Please have a safe, happy, and creative holiday weekend.

Crafty Storage

If you’re like me, whether you have your own art studio or a craft room or space in your home, one of your biggest challenges is storage and organization. When I used to primarily just do oil painting in my studio, the space and storage was more than adequate, and I have loved it for years. And considering that my husband built my studio for me himself, I love it even more for that reason. But sadly, with all the new types of altered art and mixed media projects I’ve been doing, I have simply outgrown my studio. I need more storage, and more space, so that I can get organized and have plenty of room to do what I love to do: create!

I am in the process of designing a new studio, which we’ll be creating in some unused/unfinished attic space we have in our home. So I’m in full design and planning mode. I’ve been buying books about studio design, and looking online for any photos I can use for inspiration. I have some really wonderful ideas and it’s helping me as I plan my new creative space.

Just this evening I happened upon a great blog…you know how it is when you go blog hopping: one thing leads to another and you’ve visited a ton of blogs. It can be quite fun! It can also be so wonderful when you find one that will help you with something like planning for your crafty storage and organization. The blog I found is called simply, Crafty Storage. And that’s exactly what it’s all about.

Crafty Storage Blog

No matter what size of space you have to work with, you are sure to find some great storage ideas on the Crafty Storage Blog. I’ve found so many great ideas there already, I just know I’m going to incorporate many of them into my new studio. So I really just wanted to share that link with you, in case you are looking for some crafty storage ideas as well.

Enjoy!

She Writes Love Letters Altered Kraft Envelope

I belong to a wonderful, creative community at Ning called Scraptivate. It’s for scrappers and other paper and mixed media artists.  Each month they have a creative challenge, and the challenge for March is called, “She…” We can interpret the theme in any way we want and using any media, so it really allows for a lot of creative freedom and expression. I love doing these challenges because it really helps to get my creative juices flowing! Here is my entry for the March challenge.

She...Writes Love Letters

I used a plain, Kraft paper envelope as the base, which is about 4-1/2″ x 6-1/2″. I used a large script rubber stamp to create the text on the envelope. Then I chose a nice vintage photo of a woman and sewed that to some muslin, which I’d distressed a bit. I added just a little color to the woman’s cheeks.  The flowers are 3-D scrapping stickers. The postage stamps and the long “love” clipping at the top are also stickers. I added some grungy’d up cardstock to the left and right of the image, and I stamped one side with the word, “Letters.” And in the lower left there is a 3-D paper image of some letters.

I really like the texture, depth and layers of this altered art piece.  And I loved using the Kraft envelope as the basis for the piece, as it’s something I had not used before. And I love the woman in the photo–she has a dreamy sort of quality about her, sort of like she’s thinking about whomever she is writing those love letters to.

Fall Leaves Mixed Media

This is another experiment with the mixed media technique,  also used in my Trees in Orange painting. I’m very inspired by nature and completely in awe of its beauty. So in my artwork and photography, nature is often the subject matter.

Fall Leaves Mixed Media

I didn’t use quite as much tissue paper on this painting as I did in the Trees in Orange painting, but I think it worked just as it was meant to in this painting.
