Be Glad of Life Hang Tag

This is my first attempt at being creative since my mom’s passing last month. My heart still isn’t fully in it, but she wouldn’t want me to wallow in sadness, so I’m trying to move forward…one step at a time. The Gingersnap Creations blog has a Two-Color Challenge right now, so I thought I’d try that one. The result is my my Be Glad of Life Hang Tag.

Be Glad of Life Hang Tag

I’ve used shades of brown and white here. It’s a combination of a paper grungy hang tag and embellishments, along with digital touches added in. I still love creating Altered Art…it’s my go-to form of creativity when I’m not feeling inspired by anything else. I love the sentiment too. Be glad of life…

I’m trying, Mom. I’m really trying.

Grungy Hang Tag Tutorial

I’ve had a lot of readers ask me about my Grungy Sauce Mix that I use in a lot of my projects to make things look good and grungy. So I decided to provide the recipe AND create a primitive tutorial for creating grungy hang tags.

Grungy Hang Tags

But since I have a new blog that focuses on just my country and primitive creations and decor, I posted the tutorial on that blog. Having the same exact tutorial on both blogs seemed kind of silly to me. So I’m just going to provide the link directly to my recipe and tutorial on my other blog. Just follow the link below.

Grungy Hang Tag Tutorial

You can use the Grungy Sauce Mix on all sorts of paper and also on fabric. I use it on Muslin a lot too. This is really a great way to get that grungy, rustic, primitive, aged or timeworn look you might trying to get for your projects.

Fall Flowers Hangtags

Since Autumn is one of my two favorite seasons of the year, the other being Spring, I always enjoy creating fall-themed art projects. And since I’m trying to create more and more sets when I create hangtags, I created this fall-themed hangtag set. I’m also entering this in the City Crafter Challenge Blog’s Autumn Leaves Falling Challenge. This challenge required us to create any project using the colors of Autumn Leaves. I’ve definitely used some of my favorite fall colors!

This set of four tags all started out plain, and I used my usual grungy sauce mix to grungy them up. Then I used a doily-patterned rubber stamp to stamp on the doily texture using yellow-gold ink. Next I picked out fabric  sunflower-type flowers in 2 shades of orange and I attached one to each hangtag using a brown metal button fastener. Then I chose four dimensional stickers, each with its own word, and adhered one to the bottom of each hangtag. All that was left after that was to finish each of the hangtags off with a gold organdy ribbon.

I love the colors of Autumn, don’t you?!

Vintage Photo Button Hangtags

I’ve created some different altered hangtags recently…trying to get away from doing only individual hangtags all the time. This set is one I’ve done using some chipboard vintage photo buttons.

Vintage Photo Button Hangtags

I started with four plain hangtags and used my usual secret grungy sauce mix to grungy them up. Then I took a rubber stamp that has a sort of textile/fabric texture to it and stamped each tag near the center using brown ink, just to contrast a bit with the grungy background. Then I took another decorative rubber stamp and used black ink to create a decorative ground for the buttons. Next I took four different chipboard buttons, all feature vintage photos of children, and added them using a black metal button fastener, for just an added pop of color. I finished each hangtag off by rubber stamping on a different word to each tag, and adding a brown satin ribbon to each as well.

Primitive Craft Goodies

I’m working on several projects that I’m creating for some special gals at the A Primitive Journey Community.  This August, a group of those gals will be going to Berlin, Ohio for a “Girlfriends Gathering.” They’ll be shopping for prims, sightseeing, and just having a wonderful all girls weekend. I offered to donate some goodies for the goody bags that will be given away to the girls that weekend. So below are some of the projects I’m working on for them. (Note: if you’re one of the APJ gals who is going on this trip, I’d suggest you stop reading now so that you won’t ruin the surprise!)

First up is the envelope that all my little goodies will go in. I wanted to make several small gifts for each gal, so I decided to make this envelope to put all the items inside. It’s a brown Kraft envelope, stamped with script text, the word, Simplify,  and a primitive crow, and then I added a rusty star as an accent.

Crow Simplify Envelope

I made some bottle cap magnets too. I kept these very simple: just a punched circle of scrapbook paper that resembles ticking fabric, topped with a silver heart brad. If I had some UTEE, I would have used that on these too. But I didn’t have any, naturally. I still think they are cute though.

Heart Bottle Cap Magnets

I also wanted to include some paper goodies that could actually be used. So first I made these paper flower gift tags. I used some cardstock that resembles a gingham fabric and punched out a floral shape. Then I added a white, embossed paper flower and a black brad to each tag. I topped them with some coordinating black ribbon. So they can use these as a gift tag for someone’s gift if they’d like to.

I also created some hangtags. I started with a plain hangtag, which I stamped with a faux wood texture. Then I added a butterfly stamp, and I also stamped the word, believe. I finished them off by distressing all the edges with Tim Holz Distress Ink, to give them that primitive grungy hangtag look.

Believe Butterfly Hangtag

I love how all these goodies turned out! I think I’m going to make one more little something for each envelope. Not sure what yet, but I’ll come up with something. I sure hope that the ladies at the Girlfriends Gathering will like these goodies as much as I enjoyed making them! Making things for others is really like giving a gift to yourself, because it just makes you feel good to do it!

Birthday Valentine

My sister’s birthday is on Valentine’s Day, and I decided to make her a special gift this year. Since I am just starting to get into Altered Art, I thought this would be the perfect type of gift to make for her. So she’s getting not only a very special birthday valentine, but also my very first official altered art project.

Step One: The Background

I used Golden Fluid Acrylics in a very nice deep red and black to paint the background, and I did just black on the sides of my 8×10 canvas.

Step Two: Layered Fabric Heart

I created a heart (it is for Valentine’s Day, after all) out of three layers of fabric, including red felt for the biggest heart, grungy muslin for the middle, and a black cotton print for the top. I sewed them all together and then added a transparency image of my sister and I from when we were little.

Step Three: A Grungy Hang Tag

I created a grungy hang tag with a sentiment I found online, which seemed just perfect for my project.

Altered Art Birthday Valentine Step 3

Step 4: Embellishments

I added several embellishments: torn paper, some buttons, a key with a heart shape in it etc, and I stamped some text onto the upper part of the canvas for some texture.

Step Five: Some Finishing Touches

To finish it off, I added some stickers, stamped some dragonflies, and stitched the fabric heart directly to the canvas in a few spots, just to make sure it was secure.

And tomorrow, this first altered art project and gift will be on its way to my sister in Texas.  Hope she likes it!
