Maxfield Parrish Inspired Magnets

One of my all time favorite artists is Maxfield Parrish. He was an oil painter known for creating quite luminous colors in his realistic works through a technique called glazing. He was also quite innovative, creating techniques that have never been successfully copied by any other artist. His work is quite brilliant, and beautiful, so if you have time, do Google him and his work. :) You’ve actually probably seen his work already, as many of his paintings are quite famous–though perhaps his name is not as well known as some of his paintings.

The 2 magnets I’ve created here utilize small calendar prints of two of my favorite of Parrish’s paintings: Ecstasy and Reveries. I created these as part of the 3 Muses Artist of Choice Challenge.

Maxfield Parrish Reveries Magnet

Reveries

What I did was take one of my old Maxfield Parrish calendars and cut out two of the thumbnail images from the back cover. I made slits at the edge of each figure with an Exacto Knife, and then I inserted photo images of butterfly wings to make each of them look like a fairy. On the Reveries piece, I did add a leaf sticker and a small bit of scrapbook paper near the top edge, because I needed to fill a gap since the image was smaller than the glass bevel. But beyond that I didn’t do anything else to Parrish’s beautiful images.

The next step involves copper foil that I use in my stained glass projects on occasion, and also an unlikely copper tape that is found in hardware stores: it’s Slug & Snail Copper Tape, and its true purpose is a snail repellent of some sort. But one person’s snail repellent is another person’s craft supply, I always say.

Snail TapeI used the snail tape across the bag of each calendar image. I had originally planned to solder these magnets, and copper foil is needed in order to do that–but copper foil isn’t wide enough for these images, as it normally in a maximum width of 1/4″. But the snail tape is about an inch wide, and since my magnets are around 2″ wide, it worked great for covering the back of the images with just a couple of strips.

After covering the back of the images with the snail tape, I took some copper foil and a glass bevel for each image and used the foil to wrap the edges of the bevel and adhere the image to it at the same time. The nice part about this is that no glue is necessary. And just to be sure that my bevel and image would stay in place, I turned the glass over once I had all the edges wrapped and then put flat pieces of copper foil on the back near each edge, overlapping the copper snail tape, so that it would be secure.

The last step was to add a magnet and some gold organdy ribbon to the backs, which I did with some heavy duty glue. I’ll just add that I didn’t solder these pieces because once I saw the copper foil next to the coloring of the images behind the glass, I just liked the way the copper complimented the colors in the images. If I’d soldered, the copper would have become silver in color, and while I do love that look, I think the copper was a much better aesthetic choice for these pieces. And they’re going on my refrigerator, because you can never have too many pretty magnets there.

Moments Shabby Chic Hangtag

I was feeling in a bit of a shabby chic mood the other day, so I decided to create an altered hangtag with a shabby chic flair.

Moments Shabby Hangtag

This tag was plain white to begin with, so I first spritzed it with some rose Glimmer Mist to give it some color and texture.  Next I found a vintage photo of a fairy girl that looked perfect for the tag…and her face reminds me of my oldest niece, Nikki, when she was a little girl. So that made it a great choice too. After I adhered that photo I added some baby blue fabric trim along the bottom of the tag, to contrast and complement the pink mist and roses. Then I added a beautiful pink paper flower to the bottom right corner, and it has a hint of glitter on it to give it some sparkle. I also added some dimensional clock element stickers. And I finished it off with some organdy and pink satin ribbon.

Love it!

2 of Spades ATC

Awhile back I created the first ATC I’d planned to do from a deck of playing cards. That was the 3 of Hearts ATC. So I thought it was about time I alter another card in the deck…after all, there are a lot of cards in the deck waiting to be altered! So here’s what I did.

2 Of Spades ATC

I used a Glimmer Mist on the card itself. Wasn’t sure how that would turn out since the card’s surface is very slick, and it was starting to puddle up on me. So I decided to break out the heat gun and help speed up the dry time. When that was done, I really liked the background; it’s very fluid and freeform-looking. And up close, the card does have a nice shimmer to it now, which I like a lot.  Next I added a vintage photo of a fairy girl, who has pink and purple wings.  I added a coordinating butterfly image on the fairy girl, and then I added some purple daisy stickers in the empty opposite corners. I finished the ATC off by adding some pink rhinestone gems to the daisies and to the butterfly.

OK, so 2 altered playing cards down…only 50 to go!

Fly Altered Bookmark

This bookmark features a pretty little vintage photo of a fairy girl, who appears to be thinking about flying away.

Fly Altered Bookmark

The background of the bookmark is a patterned cardstock paper; it has a neat pattern combined with old text and distressing in creams and hints of green. I added the fairy girl, and then directly under her added some coordinating paper that has a stitched look. I also added a fabric flower with a bronze brad to accent the fairy. I also added some alphas to spell out the word FLY.  And under that I added a pretty butterfly sticker. I finished it with some gold organdy ribbon.

Time Stands Still Altered Journal

This is another mini altered journal I created for the store (soon to open!).

Time Stands Still Altered Journal

The cover of the journal has a black and creamy paisley design motif. To that I added a vintage photo of a fairy girl, who’s wearing a green hooded cape. I love the face on his girl, it’s so sweet! I added a large yellow rose sticker, along with a photo of a smaller butterfly. Underneath that I added a dimensional black sticker that reads Time Stands Still.  And on either side of that sticker I added a yellow rhinestone gem, to add a little sparkle.

These journals also feature straps to keep them closed, along with file pockets inside the back cover.

Giggle Fairy Altered Journal

I made some new mini altered art journals to add to the store. I wanted to add something in a different size with some simple but elegant designs, so here’s the first one I came up with.

Giggle Fairy Altered Journal

The journal itself has a black and ivory colored design motif. I added a vintage photo of a cute little fairy girl, who appears to be trying to stifle a giggle.  I also added some rhinestone gems to the fairy’s wings, along with a glittery crown. I finished it off with a metal bracket framing the word giggle, which is on some coordinating scrapbook paper.

These journals come with straps to hold them closed, and they also feature a file pocket inside the back cover, which I thought was a neat touch.

Imagine Altered Bookmark

It’s only a paper moon,
sailing over a cardboard sea,
but it wouldn’t be make believe
if you believe in me.

(Jim Reeves song, It’s Only a Paper Moon)

I just had to start off with the lyrics to the Paper Moon song, since that’s what I heard in my head as I was making this altered bookmark.

Imagine Altered Bookmark
The background is a very soft metallic, pastel green, patterned cardstock paper, which I added a decorative bottom edge to. Next I added some coordinating cardstock near the top of the bookmark, to which I stamped on the word Imagine. Next I cut out some pink butterfly wings to turn this vintage photo of a girl into a fairy. Then I adhered them to the bookmark, and added a pink roses sticker, which also has a sprinkling of glitter on it (or is it fairy dust?). I finished the whole thing with a coordinating pink satin ribbon.

I love this little vintage fairy, sitting on her paper moon. Kind of has a teensy bit of a shabby chic flair to it, don’t you think?

Laugh Fairy Hangtag

I was quite busy in the studio this holiday weekend (thank goodness!). I got a lot done. So nice to get in there and get the creative juices flowing…and just nice to actually have the time to do so! My free time is not what it once was, so I love it when I have some time to myself to get into the studio.

This altered hangtag was made for the Gingersnaps Creations Fairies Challenge. They really have some wonderful challenges at GC, and I love anything fairy-related anyway. So I was so excited to enter this particular challenge.

Laugh Fairy Altered Hangtag

I started with a tag from 7 Gypsies. They are great because they already have some background imagery on them. I distressed the tag a bit with some Distress Ink. I just love how that looks most of the time. From there I stamped on a column image for the fairy to sit on. The cute little fairy is from Art Chix Studio (again, no connection to my site–I happened upon them after getting into Altered Art, and they have some great collage sheets there!). After I affixed her I added a rhinestone gem to her bow on her dress; I also added a butterfly image, which is raised up in relief (hard to tell in the photo), a postage sticker, and I stamped on the word, laugh. Then I added some lace and the tan flower. Another touch I added was that silver-looking-doo-dad over the hole at the top of the tag. I actually found that laying on my back patio one day…something the Hubs dropped, I’m sure. So I snagged it and tucked it away. So glad I did because it was the perfect size to fit around the hole! The final touch was the ribbon at the top.

I love my little Laugh Fairy hangtag! Hope you do too.

Time Hangtag

My second project of the day was for the April challenge at Scraptivate, the theme of which is Time. I almost always like to use vintage photos in my altered art, so I found a cute one of a little girl that I thought would make a perfect fairy.

Time Altered Hangtag

I started with a large, plain white hangtag. Then I added some texture using a rubber stamp that has a crackled paint effect. I was lucky enough to find this rubber stamp at an antique store (of all places!) for only .75 cents…so you know I could not pass that up! I used a butterfly sticker to turn my vintage photo into a little girl fairy.  I added a paper tag that has a clock on it and the word “time,” and embellished that with a brass brad. And I added some smaller butterfly stickers and a glittery flower sticker. Then I finished the whole thing off with some fun star buttons and a satin ribbon.

Not bad work, considering the migraine that was working on me during the process! It was a productive and creative day in the studio at least, and as Martha would say, that’s a good thing.

Dream Bookmark

Even though I’ve been fighting a nasty migraine off and on since Tuesday (at 1am!), I was determined to get into my studio today and get creative.  It wasn’t as fun trying to work with a migraine, but I was glad I did it anyway. The first project I finished was this new altered art bookmark, called Dream.

Altered Art Dream Bookmark

The background was created using my favorite text rubber stamp on a plain white bookmark. I added a vintage fairy, some stickers, including the butterflies for some color and texture. Then I added the fabric print flowers using a brad.  And I finished it off with some alpha stickers to spell out the word, Dream, and brown satin ribbon.
